In this video, I explore the intersection of artistic creativity and artificial intelligence through three meditative visual works inspired by my travels in the Azores. Using generative AI tools, I expand and refine the photographic material I captured on São Miguel, turning nature’s landscapes into evocative pieces of art. Your lived experiences grow the subconscious where future visions are born. Follow a gradient of curiosity and wonder, and then use AI to refine & express your visions and creative seeds.
So there are a lot of examples these days about how you can create amazing things with generative AI from a prompt, but there’s little discussion about how artistic expression truly fits into all of this. Art is born from a unique vision and angle that arises from a subconscious cultivated over a lifetime. With these simple improvised examples from my latest exploration trip I want to highlight that:
- Fundamentally nothing changes in creative projects, the most important (and also often the most enjoyable) part of the journey is the initial crafting of your vision and creative seeds, and you drive that.
- Generative AI is the most powerful tool ever created that helps us implement, refine, expand, tweak, polish etc our creative visions. Despite its current challenges (in terms of ethics, copyright, etc), its very much a net positive for creatives.
- Writing phrases and clicking buttons gets old very fast. The most important thing for a creative is to cultivate a rich subconscious. You do that by living an interesting life. Your lived experiences are what truly matter. What you do today builds the subconscious of your future. And your future visions and creative seeds will be born from that future subconscious.
- What we consider artistic output today will be seen as a minuscule part of the possible forms of creative expression available in the not too distant future. Embrace all the new tools, as a creative explorer you should wish to expand.
- Despite its impressive successes, without precise prompting and careful direction current AI fails to perform adequately. As a creative, you are on the driving seat and will remain there for the foreseeable future.
- Your mission: cultivate a rich and compelling life by following a gradient of interestingness, curiosity and wonder, enjoy the process of generating new visions and creative seeds through your cultivated subconscious, and use the best tools available (Generative AI in between them), to help you implement, expand, tweak, refine and express those visions in the most compelling and impactful ways.
