On October 22, 2024, at the phenomenal III European AI Forum in Spain, we enjoyed the result of a unique co-creation: a hAIrmony that fused artificial intelligence with humanity. It was a pioneering symphonic concert to combine the generative creativity of AI through synchronized music and videos, with the human virtuosity of the extraordinary ADDA Simfònica orchestra, conducted by Josep Vicent. The orchestra masterfully arranged, prepared, and performed the results of this collaboration with the vast artificial subconscious that generative AI offers us.
We presented four pieces inspired by great music geniuses (Mozart, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Wagner), imagining how these masters would express themes such as climate change, health challenges, conflicts, and hope.
For me, it has been a true pleasure to work with these gigantic artificial subconscious minds to create the music and videos in the AI segment. My deepest thanks to José Manuel Bonilla for proposing to us this co-creation challenge, and to Josep Vicent and ADDA Simfònica for all their talent and humanity. They are the true stars of this production, the humans who add the finishing touch to what is already the most powerful tool in history: generative AI, a superlative amplifier of our subconscious dreams.
From a technical perspective, creating the AI segment was laborious, requiring a lot of experimentation. To complicate the challenge, in some parts of the works, I chose abstract and artistic visual styles, which often puzzle current AI architectures (which still lack robust world models). One example is the abstract forms that represented anonymous people suffering from conflicts. This kind of abstraction often confuses current AI. And in this transitional era, where we coexist with an AI capable of pattern matching at a superhuman level (fast thinking, system 1), and we are heading towards a future AI that will also be able to plan and reason deeply (slow thinking, system 2), we had to hack and correct inconsistencies that may go unnoticed by many, but not by experts in the musical or visual fields. In the musical part, the arranger and Josep Vicent's team polished many of these inconsistencies, and in the visual part, we did the same with a few of them. In the end, we achieved a wonderful hAIrmony, combining the best of today's AI with human wisdom, resulting in something that moved and impacted the audience.
