Named after the Wallace Chan exhibition, Totem is a 10-minute video art that explores the theme of uncertainty which permeates these works, in the context of the dialogue between materials, space and time. It combines advanced digital particle systems and programming with visual effects and audiovisual production and postproduction processes to produce a tapestry of dynamic scenes that takes the viewer on a journey through a conceptual path expressed in virtual space and time, where fragmentation and integration serve as the poles of a fascinating audiovisual experience.
From April to October 2022, multidisciplinary artist Wallace Chan, who has pioneered titanium's unprecedented use for large-scale sculptures, presented his sculpture exhibition TOTEM at the Fondaco Marcello in Venice, launching during the opening week of the 59th Venice Biennale. The exhibition features an installation work composed of multiple unassembled parts of the artist's 10-metre titanium sculpture (A Dialogue Between Materials and Time, Titans XIV) positioned across the floorspace of Fondaco Marcello.
